The Conviction Of Manning:  A Travesty Of Justice
 By Barry Grey

http://www.countercurrents.org/grey310713.htm

The guilty verdict handed down Tuesday in the court-martial of whistle-blower Bradley Manning is a travesty of justice. The judge, Col. Denise Lind, found the 25-year-old Army private guilty of 19 of the 21 counts lodged against him, including five counts under the 1917 Espionage Act

Manning Verdict: Slow Death For Democracy
 By David Gespass

http://www.countercurrents.org/gespass310713.htm

There are two ways in which any government can seek to control security leaks. The first is by honesty and transparency, by allowing the public to know enough to make democratic decisions about how far is too far. The second is by threatening draconian consequences to anyone who exposes questionable policies and practices to the light of day. That is the path the United States, and this administration, has chosen with the prosecution of Bradley Manning and others. No amount of sophistry can hide that truth, try as the administration might. The result, for Bradley Manning, is many years in prison. The result for democracy is a slow death

Confessions Of A Climate Change Denier
 By Yotam Marom

http://www.countercurrents.org/marom310713.htm

The "Armageddon Complex" says that climate change will cause a biblical cocktail of hurricanes, floods, famines and wars. This creates a culture of climate denial among activists: without the capacity to drop other struggles, we do nothing. But our political movements are connected

Hated In Egypt: How The Palestinian Bogeyman Resurfaced Like Never Before
 By Ramzy Baroud

http://www.countercurrents.org/baroud310713.htm

The anti-Palestinian sentiment in Egypt is no laughing matter. Many Egyptian media commentators, known for their affiliation with the state, are having unlimited space to renew their hate-filled campaigns by unabashedly inciting violence against Palestinians. A fascist-like discourse has been brewing for years, but has morphed into ways unprecedented since the coup against President Mohammed Morsi by the Egyptian military on July 3

Do We Want School or Education?
 By Robert J. Burrowes

http://www.countercurrents.org/burrowes310713.htm

Each child has the potential to achieve self-realisation and to define this, simply, as the capacity to reach its full potential. To do this, it will need to develop a powerfully integrated mind in which mental functions such as sensing, thoughts, feelings, memory and conscience work together seamlessly so that the child can act with initiative, conviction and courage. And, of course, this can only happen in an environment in which the child is nurtured as a whole person

Marxism, The Taliban And Plato
 By Thomas Riggins

http://www.countercurrents.org/riggins310713.htm

Recently Simon Blackburn, the well known British philosopher, reviewed "Knowing Right from Wrong," the new book by Kieran Setiya, in the TLS ["Taliban and Plato" TLS July 19, 2013]. The essay deals with Setiya's attempt to defend ethical realism (objective moral knowledge is possible) which Blackburn rejects in favor of ethical pragmatism (useful moral knowledge is possible). I think neither of these positions are tenable and the best way to approach ethics is from a Marxist perspective

Our Amma Desecrated

We are shocked to know that these effluents and water will be reaching the sea through an open effluent channel out of the compound wall of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has issued license for this open discharge to Units 1 and 2 of the KKNPP. The discharge will be not into another planet but into the beaches and the sea water close to our homes

Eight villages have voted so far – and all have voted unanimously against the mine

Taksim To India Gate: Reclaim Your Democratic Spaces!
 By V. Arun Kumar

http://www.countercurrents.org/akumar310713.htm

From Taksim to India Gate, there lies a common story. A story of eroding democratic spaces, a story of people being stopped from speaking truth. While Turkey rose against the ploy by establishment to destroy the Gezi park and silence truth, India still has not woken up against the anti democratic act of Delhi police imposing prohibitory orders around India Gate. Delhi police, since the massive movement against the rapes and for women freedom has imposed prohibitory order around India Gate
