RAIPUR: Less than a few hundred metres from the landmark Chitrakote
waterfall, a group of Maoists blew up an under construction police
chowki on Monday. No one was injured. The construction workers sleeping
in the building were asked to move out before the Maoists planted
explosive devices.

But the two-storey three-room building was damaged along with the
tourism department's efforts to promote the waterfall as a destination.
Chitrakote is India's largest waterfall, 95 ft deep and 650 ft wide.
Often called India's Niagara, for the voluminous descent of water along
a horseshoe bend.

According to eyewitnesses, Maoists left pamphlets at the spot,
expressing their opposition to the upcoming Tata Steel plant. The
company plans to set up a 5.5 million tonne per annum steel plant at
Lohandiguda, 10 km from Chitrakote, but has been facing resistance from
adivasi farmers unwilling to part with land.
