Raipur/Rajnandgaon: A jawan was killed when a squad of Gondia district's Cheechgate police station ran into an Naxal ambush near Gannutola on Thursday.
Police received a tip-off that Naxalites had hung a banner in Gannutola and 5 jawans from the outpost reached the post and pulled down the banner. But the entire episode was a setup and a gang of armed Naxalites were in fact in hiding, waiting for the policemen. The jawans were soon caught in heavy firing from the Naxals.
One of the jawans was hit during the ambush and he succumbed to bullet injuries on the spot. Naxalites retreated soon after. The deceased jawans has been identified as Manoj Hingde, a resident of Nagra, who had been recently married. The other policemen escaped unhurt.
