GOPIO BIENNIAL CONVENTION 2011 CONCLUDES WITH ELECTION OF NEW EXECUTIVE TEAM

GOPIO International, the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (www.gopio.net), held its Biennial Convention 2011 in Iselin, New Jersey on November 18 -20, 2011.  Delegates from all over the world attended the event along with many prominent figures of the New York Tri State Indian American community. Indian Ambassador to the US Ms. Nirupama Rao, India's Ambassador to the United States was the honored guest and keynote speaker at the Gala Banquet Dinner on Saturday, November 19th. Ambassador Rao spoke on the smooth and growing bilateral relations between the United States and India and the important role played by Diaspora organizations in building bridges between countries (see a overview of the convention at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_1bJw8XQUU&feature=related and Ambassador Rao's Valedictory Address at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIAIqUZHbaY&list=UUzcGDEAYEdvJya3VFiHmYsg&feature=plcp).

"Since its inception, GOPIO has been in the forefront of promoting the well being and interest of the Indian Diaspora and had provided an unique platform to PIOs to discuss issues of relevance to them to contribute to the socio economic development of India, to encourage dialogue and community spirit and to foster friendship and understanding. GOPIO encapsulates the true spirit of global Indians and it needs to be recognized for its yeoman service to the Indian communities across the globe," said Ambassador Rao

Rao said India represented a unique model of development in the world. "Nowhere else you will find a country of India's diversity and of India's complexity. Sixty five years into India's journey as a vibrant democracy, Indian model of democratic governance together with its economic strength and dynamism of its people that propels the promise and the potential of India's role on the global stage." Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Hon. Vayalar Ravi, in his video message and congratulatory letter felicitated GOPIO for its contribution to the Indian Diaspora Movement, stating that "GOPIO International is playing a vital role in creating awareness and promoting understanding of issues of concern of the Indian Diaspora". Similar messages of congratulations and good wishes were received from Ambassador Nirupama Rao; New Jersey Governor Chris Christie; New Jersey Assembly Deputy Speaker Upendra Chivukula; India's Consul General Prabhu Dayal; Trinidad's Ambassador to the US Dr Neil Parsan; Guyana's Ambassador to the USA, Mr. Bayney Karran; Former Prime Minister and leader of Fiji Labour Party, Mr. Mahendra Chaudhry; and several others in the USA and elsewhere.

Dr. Piyush Agrawal, general convener of the conference, said: "People came from Sri Lanka, South America, Belize, Canada, Guyana, Bahrain, India," Agrawal said. Key sponsors of the convention were Sabinsa Corporation and Kotak Mahindra Bank. "We need to start more chapters which will further lead to more networking of the International Indian Diaspora," Dr. Agarwal said.

Inder Singh, chairman of GOPIO (USA) said that the convention would discuss issues affecting the NRIs and PIOs. Indians were thrown out from every country such as East Africa, Fiji, etc and this was attributed to lack of political participation in their respective countries. Political empowerment is the only solution to the problems facing the Diaspora. He said in the last few years, GOPIO had expanded with several new chapters and increased advocacy.

Dr. Thomas Abraham, Founder-President and Chairman Emeritus of GOPIO, said that GOPIO was responsible for sensitizing Government of India's policies in favor of Overseas Indians. "With our efforts the Government of India established a separate ministry for overseas Indians and we were instrumental in getting voting rights for Indian citizens outside India. GOPIO also played an important role in reducing the passport surrender fees to a nominal fee."

Conference program chair Ashook Ramsaran emphasized the need to provide a unique forum at the convention for shared aspirations, concerns, interests and benefits in education, information sharing and interactive participation.

Elections for positions in the new two-year term in the GOPIO Executive Council were held. The Elections Commission chaired by former GOPIO Chairman, Dr Thomas Abraham, assisted by K. N. Gupta (President, GOPIO India) and Satruhan Sukdeo (President, GOPIO Upper New York). The new GOPIO International Executive Council consists of: Ashook Ramsaran (USA) as GOPIO International President; Sunny Kulathakal (Bahrain) - Executive Vice President; Dr Piyush Agrawal (USA) - Senior Vice President; and Inder Singh (USA) returned as Chairman. The full day conference led by Conference Program Chairperson Mr. Ashook Ramsaran and themed "Issues and Concerns of the Indian Diaspora," was a huge success! It was instrumental in raising the Diapora's awareness on critical issues of interest and concern that confront people of Indian origin of more than 25 million people living in many countries outside of India, This conference examined several pertinent Issues and Concerns of the Indian Diaspora such as: Consular Services, Property, Taxation & Foreign Accounts Disclosures; Kolkata Memorial - Indian Migration; Health, Nutrition & Wellness for the Indian Diaspora; Challenges & Opportunities for Political Empowerment: Toward Successful Adaptation in Adopted Countries; Living in Fear: Gender & Inter-generational Abuse; Road to Entrepreneurship: How to Leverage Diaspora Networks to Jump Start New Ventures; and a Workshop - Road to Entrepreneurship. This platform provided a unique forum for education, information and interactive participation, and an opportunity to deliberate on the global Indian Diaspora; evaluate GOPIO's progress in 22 years; network, exchange ideas, and connect with PIO/NRI delegates from around the world.

The convention attendees applauded GOPIO's efforts to initiate a discussion on issues and concerns of People of Indian Origin in their host countries as well as India. Following GOPIO Executive Council and General Council meetings, the convention got a great start with welcome reception and dinner on November 18 with Deputy Speaker of New Jersey Assembly, Mr. Upendra Chivukula and Trinidad & Tobago's Consul General in New York, Dr. Rudrawatee Nan Ramgoolam. Chivukula said conventions such as these helped New Jersey in bringing the state to national focus. He said dot buster hate crime issue in Jersey City in the late 1990s helped him get involved in politics and lend a voice to the community.  "I started my career as a record clerk in the Democratic Party which no one wanted but I used the opportunity to grow and taught games to youth to win over the confidence of the community. I became chairman of the Franklin Township Democratic Party and reversed the town position from Republican-Democrats 8:1 in favor of Democrats 8:1 within a short time.  I love my name and did not want to change it and people slowly accepted it without hesitation." See Chivukula on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DslUv8Adfjo.

Dr. Rudrawatee Nan Ramgoolam, Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago in New York, said India and Trinidad and Tobago shared a very unique bond of friendship and affection as its ancestors came from many parts of India."We are thankful to the Government of India for erecting the Kolkatta Memorial as a tribute to indentured laborers. Despite extreme poverty and hardship they maintained their heritage in the Caribbean and that's visible even today. There is a crying need to teach the language of our forefathers and heritage to our children that is slowly fading." See Consul General Ramgoolam at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zyY1GQfxSk.

Recognition of life members (Shaheen Majeed, Vijay Nahata, Dr Jean Jacob and Harbachan Singh) and sponsors (Kotak Mahindra Bank, News India Times and Sabinsa Corporation) were given. A memorable Convention 2011 souvenir brochure for this convention was released at the evening. GOPIO PASSES RESOLUTIONS ON DIASPORA ISSUES

GOPIO has passed a dozen resolutions at the concluding session of the convention. GOPIO convention delegates have urged the Government of India to withdraw the proposal to impose tax on Non-resident Indians who stay beyond 60 days during a visit to the mother land. It will be detrimental to the interests of NRIs who contribute substantially to the nation's development. At a recent meeting in New Jersey the organization has passed several resolutions to protect the interests of Indian Diaspora. GOPIO wants the Government of India to set up a mechanism to enable NRIs to voice their grievances and prevent adverse government policies. Resolutions passed include plea for nomination of a few prominent NRIs to the Rajya Sabha, initiation of suitable steps to set up fast track courts to deal with the growing number of property offences targeting NRIs and steps for speedy disposal of cases involving custody of children of NRI parents.

It has also urged the government to augment the staff strength of consulates for the convenience of NRIs. The meeting also has resolved to identify and designate a single date that can be called International Indian Emigration Day. While welcoming the setting up of Global Advisory Council GOPIO has requested the government to give representation to Diaspora organizations in the council. The meeting has also resolved to extend all support to the Know India Programme initiated by the government and wants a GOPIO-Pravasi member committee to be set up to initiate the programme. More and more job seekers from India are falling prey to unscrupulous elements abroad. GOPIO has urged the government to take suitable steps for the rehabilitation of such victims. GOPIO has also expressed special thanks to the authorities in the Kingdom of Bahrain for taking prompt action to protect the Indian community during the recent disturbances.

The meeting has also urged the Government of India to end the discriminatory practices against NRIs at archeological sites and hotels.

GOPIO-TEL AVIV, GOPIO-JAIPUR AND GOPIO-AHMEDABAD IN THE OFFING

GOPIO-TEL AVIV INITIATED

Members of the Indian community settled around the city area met at Namaste Restaurant in Ashdod to initiate the formation of GOPIO, Tel Aviv chapter, on Sunday, November 27.

There are over 75,000 Indians settled in Israel since the wave of first emigration from India in 1948, after the establishment of the nation. Ever since, they have kept close contact with India, regularly visiting their native places back home, having Indian movies, television channels, entertainment shows, publications in Marathi and inviting distinguished personalities from India etc.

The relationship between India and Israel received further boost with the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations in 1991. There are direct flights between Tel Aviv and Mumbai as also Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv boasts of the largest Indian diamond industrialists, next to New York and Brussels. The State Bank of India and other Indian corporations also have their offices throughout the country stretching from Haifa in the north to Eilat in the South. Besides there is a large Gujarati community that is involved in business as also Indians from north India working for the shipping industry.

John Perry welcomed those present and reviewed the formation, working and achievements of GOPIO. He stressed how the organization of Indian living abroad has created an awareness in promoting understanding of issues of concern - social, cultural, educational, economic, or political. He particularly mentioned his relationship with the founders including Dr. Thomas Abraham, Inder Singh and Dr. Jagat Motwani and praised their hard work that has resulted in GOPIO getting the recognition due both from the government of India as well as from the Indian media overseas and the billions of Indians settled abroad.

He explained to those present the procedure for initiating the formation of a chapter and thereupon those present decided to authorize five members to go ahead and send out a Letter of Intent to the GOPIO executives.

The signatories to the letter are: Yehoshua Naor, Moshe Yeheskel, Jacqueline Solomon, Zehava David and Yosef Reuben. John Perry and Noah Massil have been named patrons of the chapter.

GOPIO HEALTH COUNCIL CELEBRATES WORLD DIABETES DAY WITH A TALK ON "UNDERSTANDING PRE-DIABETES"

On November 14, which is "World Diabetes Day", Global Organization of people of Indian Origin-Health Council (GOPIO Health) and Stamford Hospital Diabetes and Endocrine Center organized a program "Understanding Pre-Diabetes" at the Tully Center in Stamford, CT. The speakers were Debra Milne, RN, BSN, CDE, Administrative Director - Diabetes and Endocrine Center, Bismruta Misra, M.D., M.P.H. Endocrinology, Assitant Clinical Professor, Columbia University and Sangeeta Ahuja, MS, RD, CDE Education Program Instructor - Diabetes & Endocrine Center.

Evidence indicates that the South Asians around the world are at an increased risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Studies also indicate that they get theses diseases at an earlier age. This is probably due to a combination of genetics and the environment. The parameters that assess the risk factors for these diseases like BMI and Waist circumference need to be lower for South Asian population.

Recent studies have shown that the South Asian daily intake includes high levels of refined Carbohydrates. When this diet is combined with physical inactivity it leads to a higher risk of developing Diabetes.

This health awareness program was offered FREE and the speakers discussed ways to diagnose Pre-Diabetes along with potential strategies by which Pre Diabetes could be prevented or delayed in this high risk group. The presentation was well attended and was followed by a very active Q/A session.

"This program was immensely valuable as it gave people the tools needed to recognize that they have the ability to improve their health. The presentation was not only culturally sensitive but the speakers spoke from their hearts to the audience. I am so glad to have attended it", said Kathy Kraus RD a nutritionist.

Dr. Bismruta Misra said," It is wonderful that this Health awareness program was organized for the community. I was happy and impressed that people want to be educated about diabetes and how to prevent the disease.  I was particularly impressed by the thoughtful questions members in the audience had. I feel that education is key in the battle against diabetes".

"Consumption of plant based diet, that is rich in legumes and beans and low fat dairy products along with a healthier life style that includes regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing diabetes", said Sangeeta Ahuja. "Working with a good medical team, having a plan and tracking your progress is needed to prevent complications that are associated with these chronic diseases", she continued.

As in Indian community, the problem of the girls from India as brides and facing abandonment after few weeks or days of marriage, domestic violence, dowry demand and other cultural issues is increasing day by day. This has also been highlighted on the day. The consensus is that the Indian cultural and traditional marriage values are at risk and there should be community Panchayat should be set up to resolve the conflict ensuring women safe and secure environment with the in laws family. The children born in such wedlocks are also suffering and liberal divorcee system has made it more difficult. Indianz GOPIO friends have talked about the issue to the government and designing a plan around the women who have become victims of domestic violence in fraud marriages after coming to New Zealand.

POEMS OF LIFE AS A PIO BY Dr. SASENARINE PERSAUD

Guyanese born PIO Dr Sasenarine Persaud has released his most recent collection of poems titled 'Lantana Strangling Ixora". The poems provide a ready metaphor for the consciousness of the Americas overcoming that of India in the Americas-the mainstreaming and divesting of yoga from its Hindu origins being the most visible manifestation. This collection ranges widely in its geographical and historical concerns, from Canada to Guyana to India and places in between, exploring the contradictions in our lives: familial influences, terrorism, literature, politics, race, and the power of language and representation.

"Persaud's poems . . . are like miniature raags, sensuous units of Indian music obeying conventions mysterious to western ears". -The Globe and Mail. "Each poem, held on the tongue, tastes true-he's one of those rare poets who gets the recipe of humanness exactly right."-Canadian Literature. "Poetry timeless in nature in its discussions of sensuality, love, and mourning . . . his poetry is in fact refreshingly sensual and realistic . . ."-News India Times.

Dr Sasenarine Persaud was co-chairperson of GOPIO's conference program at GOPIO's 10th Anniversary Convention held in 1999 in New York.

NEWS OF INTEREST TO NRIs AND PIOs AROUND THE WORLD

INDIAN AMERICANS GROW TO 3.2 MILLION

In a befitting tribute to the ideals and message of peace and non-violence propounded by Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhiji was honoured in the Netherlands in a special way through opening of an Indian Cultural Centre named

Indian Americans have reached as the largest among the Indian Diaspora in any country, reaching to 3.2 million Indian Americans in 2010 living in the United States. They led all Asian American households with highest media household income. The population does not include close to 300,000 Indo Caribbeans and other Diaspora Indians.

At 3,183,063, Indian American made up 18 percent of the Asian American population in 2010, up from 16 percent in 2000, according to a new compilation of 2010 census data.

According to 2007 to 2009 data, Indian Americans led all Asian American groups in the country in median household income at $86,660. The next highest total was $77,596 for Taiwanese households.

Taiwanese and Indians also led in per capita income among Asian American groups, with $38,312 and $36,533, respectively, followed by Malaysians ($33,264) and Sri Lankans ($32,480).

Bangladeshi Americans had the biggest percentage increase over the decade, skyrocketing 157 percent, according to the study, "A Community of Contrasts: Asian Americans in the United States, 2011," by the Asian Pacific American Legal Centre and the Asian American Justice Centre.

The Pakistani population had the second highest population bump with a 100 percent rise. The Sri Lankan and Indian American populations increased 85 percent and 68 percent, respectively.

Among the South Asian groups, Pakistanis had the highest rate of naturalization at 57 percent, while just 50 percent of Bangladeshi Americans, 47 percent of Indian Americans and 43 percent of Sri Lankan Americans were naturalised.

About 200,000 Indian legal permanent residents were eligible to become citizens in 2008.

The leading six Asian countries for immigrant visas issued from 2001-2010 were: Philippines, 350,694; China, 286,008; India, 267,403; Vietnam, 193,049; Bangladesh, 84,643; Pakistan, 69,202.

INDIAN BANKS FLUSH WITH NRI DEPOSITS

With the rupee trading above Rs 50 against the US dollar, remittances from non-resident Indians are surging. In October, the local currency was trading at around Rs 45. Banks like Kotak Mahindra Bank is witnessing a 40-50% y-o-y growth in remittances, while other smaller banks are seeing their NRI deposits growing by 10-30%. The spike in remittances is also partially attributed to the financial crisis in Europe and political unrest in West Asia.

With the rupee breaching the 50-mark, deposits in dollar accounts such as foreign currency non- resident account bank schemes (FCNR) (B) have earned an annualized 40% return. To make it sweeter, such accounts can now be held in freely convertible currency. Currently, currencies designated by the Reserve Bank include dollar, pound sterling, yen, euro, Canadian dollar and Australian dollar.

Kerala-based banks have been the biggest beneficiaries of the remittance windfall. Nearly 21% of the deposit base of Federal Bank is accounted by NRIs. For the second quarter, the bank has seen a 30% growth in NRE (non-resident external rupee account) and FCNR accounts. "Nearly 7% of pan Indian remittances come through our bank and the rupee weakening has given a further boost," says A Surendran, head, international banking, Federal Bank. The bank is expecting a 30% growth in its non-resident business this fiscal.
