Breaking: NORAD Rd. closed; explosives team on the way 10 Feb 2011 We're learning that what appeared to be a false alarm is being taken more seriously than we previously reported at NORAD. We were told by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office that a bad battery [?!?] set off an explosives detector. Peterson AFB has issued this alert: The road to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station is closed temporarily after a detection system tested positive on a vehicle at the gate near the installation visitors' center. An explosives ordnance detection team and a military working dog bomb detection team from the 21st Space Wing at Peterson AFB is en route to the scene to investigate.
 
House votes to proceed on Patriot Act extension 10 Feb 2011 The House on Thursday voted to proceed on a measure that would extend key provisions of the Patriot Act counter-terrorism surveillance law, two days after the proposal came up short in a Republican-led effort to approve it under fast-track rules. The House voted 248-to-176 to proceed on the measure, with nine lawmakers not voting. Only four Republicans voted on Thursday against proceeding, in contrast to the 26 who opposed the bill on Tuesday night. The four Republicans voting "no" on Thursday were Reps. Ron Paul (Texas), Chris Gibson (N.Y.), Raul Labrador (Idaho) and Tom McClintock (Calif.). [Thank you, Ron Paul, et. al.!]

Fury of millions as Mubarak defies his nation and says he is NOT going to quit immediately 10 Feb 2011 Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak tonight announced that he will not yet be standing down as leader. He told his nation in a live TV broadcast that he would instead not take part in another presidential election, promising to oversee the transition to a true democracy 'without hesitation'. The news sparked fury with thousands of anti-government protesters who had gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square in the hope the president would resign. Cries of 'Leave! Leave!' were heard and many waved their shoes in the air in disgust.
 
Egypt's Mubarak Refuses to Go 10 Feb 2011 Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has refused to resign, in a TV address which brought a furious reaction from protesters. He confirmed he would remain in power until new presidential elections in September but would pass on some authority to vice president Omar Suleiman. Saying he was addressing the people in Tahrir Square and the nation, he said he believed in the honesty of the demands of the protesters and their intentions. But the thousands watching the speech in the square shouted "leave, leave" and waved their shoes at TV screens.
 
Egypt's powerful VP tells protesters to go home 10 Feb 2011 Egypt's Vice President Omar Suleiman on Thursday told street protesters and strikers to head home or back to work, in his first speech after President Hosni Mubarak delegated him presidential powers.
