A school in Gurgaon, Haryana, a state where many still frown upon inter-caste marriages, is awarding 10 points to children of couples who have married out of caste. The Shri Ram School at Aravali in Gurgaon, which started registration for its pre-school classes for the 2011-12 session from January 27, has decided to adopt this special provision for nursery admissions. Even as the 100-point system for admission to pre-school in the Capital continues to be mired in controversy, the Shri Ram School in Gurgaon has adopted it for pre-school admissions for the academic session 2011-12.

"We are the first school in Gurgaon to adopt the 100-point system, which was followed by schools across Delhi," Manju Bharatram, chairperson of the Shri Ram Schools, told Newsline.

"We are giving 10 points to the children of couples who have married out of caste," she added.

All the other branches of the school across Delhi follow the 100-point system, which has been enforced by the government under the Right to Education Act. However, schools in Gurgaon are not bound to follow these rules, or any of the orders passed by the Delhi Directorate of Education. School authorities said the decision to award points to children from inter-caste marriages was taken to build a "better society".

"We believe that if two people from two different communities/castes can learn to live together, it will help build a better society. Their children have richer values, and come from backgrounds that are rich in different cultures," Bharatram said.

Pankaj Yadav, Director of Primary Education with the Haryana Directorate of School Education, could not be reached for comments.
