URGENT ACTION ALERT

Water above Waist – level in Wang  Marathwadi

Fax Now to CM, Dy. CM and Rehab Minister of Maharashtra

Friends,

You all must have been following the updates from Satara on the struggle by the Wang Marathwadi dam-affected villagers. As in the case of numerous dam-projects, even here, most of the project oustees are yet to be rehabilitated suitably with alternative land and livelihood. Out of not less than 1700 affected families, barely 30% have received some form of rehabilitation and the rest are still having to struggle for their rights.

Responding to the people's demands and dialogue at the Mantralaya with the Rehabilitation Minister, Mr. Patang Rao Kadam and the District Collector, Satara in May, 2012, it was committed that good agricultural lands would be shown to the oustees at Sangli. However, they were only shown uncultivable lands, that were unacceptable to the PAFs.

After constant agitation in the standing waters and negotiations, the district administration agreed not to close two gates this monsoon. However, with the constant rains and rising waters, people are compelled to continue with their Jal Satyagraha. If the State does not intervene immediately, it will prove to be a watery grave for hundreds of oustee families.

Even as we write to you, hundreds of women, men and children, even elderly persons are standing in waist-deep water, facing the rising reservoir, continuing their Jal Satyagraha and challenging the cruel inaction of the state government in responding to the legitimate demands of the displaced families.

Please do respond to this crisis call of the affected villagers, striving to save their farms, families and village-communities.
