THE HIMALAYAN TALK: PALASH BISWAS TALKS AGAINST CASTEIST HEGEMONY IN SOUTH ASIA

INDIA AGAINST ITS OWN INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Posted by The Himalayan Voice:
[Nearly 80 million, a quarter of the world's total, different indigenous peoples are scattered across India. 'They range from some of the last uncontacted indigenous communities in the world, like the Sentinelese of the Andamans, to some of the largest, such as the Gonds and Santhals of central India.' Below is an article by Palash Biswas, who himself was one of the activists of Chipko Movement in India in the early 70's, the first movement of its kind in the world for the protection of environment. In the article he argues that the Government of India is apathetic towards the indigenous peoples in the country. The Indian government rejects the term "indigenous peoples" insisting that all Indians are indigenous to India which actually is not the case. - Editor]
