Neso stir for AFSPA repeal

GUWAHATI: Reiterating the demand for an influx-free NE region and repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), the North East Students' Organization (Neso) on Monday staged protests in front of the Raj Bhavan of the seven respective northeastern states.

Neso also opposed the proposed construction of many dams across the upper reaches of the rivers in Arunachal Pradesh and pressed for immediate fulfillment of its charter of demands submitted to the Prime Minister earlier.

"The resolution was taken recently after the members of the organization met to discuss various issues concerning the region as a whole. Our resolutions include proper education policy and human resource development, repeal of all draconian laws, implementation of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, popularly known as (Inner Line Permit) system to the entire NE region, economic and infrastructure development," said Neso chairman Samujjal Bhattacharjee.

The students' body also demanded special constitutional status and separate time zone for the region.

"We also pressed the Centre to take immediate action to prevent harassment of students and youth from the northeast in other parts of the country, especially in New Delhi. In February, at least 10 NE students were attacked in Delhi. Delhi Police have delayed in registering FIR and no action was taken to nab the culprits," alleged Caisi Mao, an activist from Nagaland, who is studying in Delhi.
