CID asked to probe brutal killing of teenager in WBPTI, Feb 16, 2011, 06.01pm ISTKOLKATA: Faced with massive public outcry, West Bengal government today asked the state CID to probe the killing of a 16-year-old boy by a gang of drunken youths, who tried to molest his sister near Barasat town here. "CID has been asked to take over investigation into the incident which is undesirable and shocking. We have asked the DM and SP to explain the reason of delay in police action to save Rajib Das and arrest the culprits," stat Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh said. Ghosh said the constable on duty at the Additional SP's bungalow was suspended for not responding to the repeated pleas of Rajib Das' sister. Two persons have been detained in this connection, police said. Rajib, who was due to appear in this year's Madhyamik Examination (secondary examination), was stabbed, kicked and repeatedly punched to death for resisting the gang who were trying to molest his sister near the district magistrate's bungalow at Barasat. He was escorting his sister, returing from her workplace at a call centre in Kolkata, on a bicycle from the station to their residence when the miscreants intercepted them late on the night of February 14, they said. Rajib was left bleeding on the street at a spot, 400 metres away from the DM's bungalow, and later taken to Barasat Hospital by passers-by, the bereaved family said. He was shifted to R G Kar hospital but by then he had already succumbed to grievous injuries, they said. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee visited the residence of the deceased at Banamalipur locality and met his parents, sister and grandmother. Bhattacharjee, who also interacted with the neighbours, said everything will be done to ensure all the culprits were identified and brought to book. The chief minister, who spent roughly 45 minutes with the grieving family, asked the Inspector General (South Bengal) to take the victim's father to the CM's office at Writers Building next week so that some monetary help could be arranged. Bhattacharjee faced protest by local Trinamool Congress men, alleging total law and order failure in the area, while entering the home. The incident triggered widespread protest in the area with locals and some political parties blocking the road. Opposition SUCI activists also staged a demonstration in front of Writer's Building, which led to the arrest of 104 people, police said. Barasat, Feb. 15: A Class X student was stabbed to death by a group that pursued his sister, sprinkled alcohol on her and pounced on the protesting boy, unchallenged by armed guards in a district magistrate's bungalow less than 100 metres away despite the girl thumping on the gates and pleading for help. Rajib Das, aged 16 and scheduled to appear for Madhyamik examinations next week, died this morning at RG Kar Hospital after he was attacked in Barasat for trying to save his sister Rinku Das, a call centre employee who was on her way home from her office in the city. The guards in the IAS officer's bungalow could have saved the boy but at least one of them cited protocol and expressed inability to intervene. "We can't leave the post. You go to the police station," Rinku quoted one of the armed guards as having said from behind the gates. The guards gave the telephone number of the Barasat police station, about a kilometre away, and "advised" her to make a call. When Rinku, 23, started running back to her brother, Rajib's limp body was being carted by a rickshaw van. The van-puller and its lone passenger had found him lying on the edge of Kachhari Maidan, the backyard of the homes of top North 24-Parganas officials that turns into a den of drunks and drug addicts after darkness. "My brother wouldn't have had to die if the police came to my help," the girl said this afternoon. A car from her Lenin Sarani office had dropped Rinku in Sealdah, from where she took a train to Barasat, on the outskirts of Calcutta. Every night, either Rajib or his father would wait at Barasat station to take her home. Rajib was cycling his sister home, at Banikanthanagar 2km away, when the gang stopped them on the road connecting the station with Jessore Road. They wanted to douse his sister in liquor and take her away. Rajib would not let that happen. Rinku saw her brother alive for the last time around 11.30pm, surrounded by three men and being kicked and punched. It was opposite the zilla parishad bhavan, a few metres from the district police quarters. When she saw him next, "blood was oozing out of a gash in his stomach and he was groaning". Senior police officers said no rules could prevent a man in uniform from rushing to the aid of a victim. At least one of the armed guards could have gone with the girl to enquire about the matter, they said. The North 24-Parganas district magistrate cited an "inquiry" to brush off Rinku's account. "I've heard about the allegation but, after conducting an inquiry, I found it was not true," Vinod Kumar told The Telegraph. "He (the DM) is a liar. I shook the iron gates of his bungalow for five minutes. Had his guards come to my help, my brother's life could have been saved," Rinku said when told about the DM's remarks. District superintendent of police Rahul Srivastava, who lives opposite the DM's house, said Rajib was killed for protecting his sister. "We took the girl to the spot and reconstructed the event today. The boy, too, gave a statement before his death." However, no arrest had been made in 24 hours. "We are trying to identify the culprits," said Srivastava. It fell upon a cook to show the concern the guards would not. Prosen Das, who works as a cook in Calcutta, was returning home in a cycle van. "I saw the boy lying on his abdomen. As we (Das and the van-puller) went close, we saw him bleeding. We picked him up and started going towards the hospital when we saw his sister running," Das said this evening. Neither the DM nor the police had sought his account till then. Sensing trouble, Rinku had asked Rajib to pedal faster. "But one of them, who had a swollen eye, possibly because of an infection, caught up with us and held the cycle by the handle. One of them was carrying a liquor bottle. They surrounded us and started shaking their legs as if they were dancing," she recounted. The man with the bottle sprinkled liquor on Rinku and was about to pour the entire bottle on her head when Rajib protested. "They pinned him down and started kicking and punching him. My brother was pleading for mercy," recalled Rinku. One of them whipped out a gun from his waist and told Rajib: "Are you a don of this area? See this? It can silence you for good." Rinku sought help from four passengers on a van, but they fled seeing the gun. "She screamed on the road for over 20 minutes and no one came to her help. Can you imagine?" said Babu Saha, her neighbour. "Everyone here knows what happens on the ground after sunset but we still have to suffer this," Saha added. Sunil Mukherjee, the Trinamul Congress chairperson of Barasat municipality, told Rinku it was her fate. "Ki aar kora jabe… kopale ja lekha chhilo tai hoyechhe," Mukherjee said sitting in her tiled-roof home. Rinku exploded in anger. "How can you say this? Would you have said the same thing had it happened to your brother and sister?" she asked. Girl's molesters kill saviour brother near Kolkata airport
Sanjib Chakraborty, TNN, Feb 16, 2011, 07.03am ISTBARASAT: A 16-year-old schoolboy was murdered for protecting his sister from molesters in Barasat, just 15km from Kolkata airport, on Monday night. Rajib Das was battered with a beer bottle and a revolver butt but kept fighting to save his sister, who was being dragged away by the gang. The goons stabbed him six times but he still refused to let go.
His sister, Rinku, kept screaming for help but no one came to their aid, although the district magistrate's office is a stone's throw away. A rickshawpuller tried to intervene but the gang beat him unconscious. In the end, when the gang realized Rajib was not going to buckle, they ran away. The brave boy was brought to RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata but died early on Tuesday. He would have appeared in Madhyamik in a few days.
The incident shocked townspeople and policemen alike. North 24-Parganas SP Rahul Srivastava is monitoring the case. "We will arrest the killers by tonight," he said on Tuesday. Sketches of the suspects have been prepared.
Every night, Rajib would take a break from his studies to go to Barasat station to bring his sister, who travels out of town for work, home. On Monday, he left his home in Banikantapur around 11pm. A half-hour later, he was cycling back with Rinku riding pillion. The route passes through Kachari Maidan, which is unlit and deserted at night. It was a two-year-old routine and they did not think twice about it.
On Monday night, the siblings saw three drunk youths loitering on the roadside. They made some obscene gestures at Rinku. "My brother flew into a rage. In hindsight, I think we should have left the place. I should not have let him get off the bicycle," Rinku said. Rajib confronted the gang but the 16-year-old was no match for the armed goons. They first attacked him with a beer bottle, said Rinku, and then kicked and punched him. They lunged at Rinku and tried to drag her away.

Youth killed for protesting abuse of sister
IANS, Feb 15, 2011, 07.09pm ISTKOLKATA: A 16-year-old boy in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district died Tuesday after being severely beaten up by some people after he protested their using abusive language against his sister, police said.
"The boy, Rajib Das, was severely beaten up by three miscreants late Monday night when he protested against them for using abusive language at his elder sister. He succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital this (Tuesday) morning," said North 24 Parganas Additional Police Superintendent (Barasat) S.M.H. Meerza.
According to the local people, the incident took place at around 11.30 pm Monday when Rajib, along with his sister, were returning home at Banikanthapur near Barasat.
At the Kacharimaidan area, where the offices and bungalows of senior police officers and district officials are housed, three persons made abusive comments at his sister. Rajib protested this.
The three then beat up Rajib and attacked him with sharp weapons. Rajib was rushed to Barasat district hospital and from there he was shifted to the R.G. Kar Hospital here.
The death of the boy has triggered an agitation in the area. The locals put up road blockade for a few hours, alleging negligence of police to tackle the killers.

The incident has shocked the state especially as it occurred within a hundred metres of the District Magistrate's bungalow.
The girl had even run to the District Magistrate's bungalow and called for help but the policemen on duty apparently refused to budge.

Barasat (Bengali: বারাসাত Barasat) is a city in the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal, India and is the district head quarter of the district North 24 Parganas. It is a part of the area covered byKolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.[2] The town is an important railway and roadway junction. Barasat is also the name of a sub-division centering the city.
As an urban setup in the vicinity of the Kolkata, the town is within the area of Greater Calcutta. Several significant roads like National Highway 34 (Krishnanagar Road leading towards North Bengal), Jessore road ( road leading to Jessore in Bangladesh via Bongaon) ; Road leading to Basirhat etc. cross through the town.

In the early nineteenth century, there was a college in Barasat for the cadets who arrived from Europe for the first time to India.[3] From 1834 to 1861, Barasat was the seat of a joint-magistrate, known as "Barasat District". In 1861, the joint magistracy was abolished, and the Barasat District became a sub-division of the Twenty-four Parganas district.[3]
The town has important historical contributions, including historical landmarks such as the first Nilkuthi (establishments of the initial English settlers who started the cultivation of indigo dye), the Bungalow of Lord Hastings, the Bungalows of Magistrates of 24 Parganas and the site of hanging of Maharaja Nandkumar. In 1831 under the leadership of Syed Ahmed and his disciples, Mir Niser Ali or Titumir, Barasat witnessed movements like the Ferazeedisturbances against the British dominion in India before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.[citation needed]

Barasat is located at 22.23°N 88.45°E.[4] Barasat is located in the Ganges Brahmaputra delta region in the district of North 24 parganas,West Bengal state in the eastern India. The Bangladesh border - at Petrapole is situated about 70/ 80 km from the city.
The average altitude is 11 metres. No notable river flows by the city. The nearest one is Ganges itself — about 15 km to the west. The city is in the Gangetic plain lacking any hills.
Barasat is 22 km from Sealdah Station on the Sealdah–Bangaon branch line. It is at one end of the Barasat-Basirhat-Hasnabad branch line ofEastern Railway.[5]

The climate is tropical — like the rest of the Gangetic West Bengal. The hallmark is the Monsoon — from early June to mid September. The weather remains dry during the winter (mid November to mid February) and humid during summer.

An important trade centre for rice, legumes, sugarcane, potatoes, and coconuts, cotton weaving is the major industry in Barasat.
There are a major textile mill and a rubber factory near the town. However one can find many small industries in and around the town. The business of the city is mainly retailing, though there are dealers who supply mainly to the rest of the district. Barasat Bazar is the main hub for retailer and wholesaler business man. Barasat Bazar is located between Barasat rail station and NH35.
The major occupation of the residents is service. The proximity to Kolkata helps residents commute daily to Kolkata.

From Kolkata,Take V.I.P Road (Najrul Islam Sarani) off Ultadanga (V.I.P.Crossing) to reach Airport Gate No. 1 and take right to Jessore Road (National Highway 34).Barasat is 8 kilometres straight drive from this crossing.
Barasat is a major roadway junction. The NH 34 (initially under the name Krishnanagar Road) goes towards north ultimately to the North Bengal and is the major link between Calcutta and the North-East India.
The Jessore Road (NH 35) leads to Bongaon and ultimately to the Bangladesh border atPetrapole.
The Taki Road leads to Basirhat, Hasnabad and Taki via Berachampa.
The Barrackpore Road links National Highway 35 at Barasat with Kalyani Expressway andBarrackpore.
The road of Barasat is very narrow and the residence of this place don't expect a good response from Road Department

Barasat Junction is the railway station, on Bongaon line of Sealdah Station (North Section). This junction is where Bongaon line andHasnabad-Basirhat line of Kolkata Suburban Railway get separated.
The Barasat - Basirhat Railway line was originally run by Martin's Light Railways. Now it is a section under Sealdah division of Eastern Railways.

Mainly depends on cycle-rickshaws and, quite interestingly, the three-wheeled man-driven "cycle-vans". Auto rickshaws ply between Barasat and nearby areas. Several buses connect the town with Kolkata, other suburbs of Kolkata and the other towns of West Bengal. The bus service to Kolkata is extremely frequent.

As of 2001 India census[6], Barasat had a population of 231,515. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Barasat has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; 54% of the literates are male and 46% are female. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The culture milieu in Barasat reflects the usual culturel characteristics of similar small towns in Bengal.The educated middle-class community continues to perpetuate the Bengali cultural manifestations like drama, recitation, classical music, songs and dances, while young Turks take a rather revolutionary stand and let out their feeling in the form of minor little magazines and socially relevant functions like health check up camps etc.
In Barasat some religious ashrams like the ashrams of Pranabananda, Prabhu Jagadbandhu [1], Shibananda Dham, Shankar Moth O Mission [2], Sree Sree Yogashram, Hazarat Ekdil Shah Darga etc. are located.
The cultural diversity has increased over the years with the infiltration of more people from Bangladesh.An annual fair held in honour of a Muslim saint, Hazarat Ekdil Shah is attended by both Muslims and Hindus, since hundreds of years. Kalipuja is a very important event in Barasat.All the communities join this occasion togather.Kalipuja is organized by different clubs of Barasat.

The town's schools are either run by the state government or by private organisations. Schools mainly use English or Bengali as the medium of instruction. The schools are affiliated with the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), or the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Under the 10+2+3 plan, after completing their secondary education, students typically enrol in a 2 year junior college (also known as a pre-university) or in schools with a higher secondary facility affiliated with West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. Students usually choose from one of three streams — liberal arts, commerce, or science, though vocational streams are also available. Upon completing the required coursework, students may enrol in general or professional degree programmes.

Some small local newspapers and magazines (Review Preview, Sabujer Abhijan etc.) are there. However the scenario is dominated by the media of Kolkata. Bengali language newspapers like Anandabazar Patrika, Aajkaal, Bartaman, Sangbad Pratidin and Ganashakti are widely circulated. Regional and national English newspapers such as The Telegraph, The Statesman, Asian Age, Hindustan Times and The Times of India are available. Kolkata's radio stations are available here. Eleven local FM stations: AIR Kolkata (FM Rainbow & FM Gold), Radio Mirchi (98.3 MHz), Red FM (93.5 MHz), Aamar FM (106.2 MHz), Gyan Vani (105.4 MHz),Fever FM(104 MHz),Radio One(94.3 MHz),Meow FM(104.8 MHz),BIG FM(92.7 MHz) and Power FM (107.8 MHz) are available. The state-owned television broadcaster Doordarshan provides two free terrestrial channels, while MSO provide a mix of Bengali, Hindi, English and other regional channels via cable.

Football (soccer) is the passion of the citizens. Cricket is also played with great fanfare. Besides Indian sports like Kabbadi, kho-kho are also played.
The Barasat stadium holds some matches of the Kolkata football league and also several district-level, state-level and, infrequently, national level tournaments of several games like volleyball, soccer etc.

Barasat is one of the areas where ground water is affected by arsenic contamination.[8]
The North 24 Parganas District Hospital is located in Barasat. Barasat also has several privately operated nursing homes and hospital.Barasat Cancer Research and Welfare Center is a treatment as well as research facility for cancer patients.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was the deputy Magistrate of 24 Parganas in the 19th century.
Warren Hestings lived here during the early 18th centuty.
Peary Charan Sarkar was a notable scholar of the town. He was the head master of Barasat Government High School.
