Wisconsin National Guard Preps For Worker Unrest After Governor Unveils Emergency Budget --GOP governor told Milwaukee Public Radio he briefed Wisconsin National Guard to prepare them for any worker unrest 14 Feb 2011 Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, unveiled an emergency budget proposal Friday to deal with the state's growing budget woes. Wisconsin has a $137 million deficit this year, and faces a projected $2.9 billion budget shortfall for 2012 and 2013. Under Walker's plan, public employees would lose all of their collective bargain rights, except a limited negotiation of wages... Unions erupted in outrage as they learned about Walker's proposal.

Scott Walker says he is confident state workers will continue to show up for work and do their jobs, despite their potential disappointment in his emergency budget proposal. However, if there is worker unrest, Walker says the Wisconsin National Guard is prepared to respond. Walker first shared his plan with fellow Republican lawmakers in a closed-door meeting Thursday.

'A weapon of mass destruction was found in the U.S.': Shock confession of Customs officer 13 Feb 2011 A port official has admitted that a 'weapon of mass effect' has been found by 'partner agencies' in the U.S., raising major questions over a possible government cover-up... In the interview screened by San Diego's 10News, Al Hallor, assistant San Diego port director, said 'weapons of mass effect' had been found, although he did not specify exactly where or what they were. The Customs and Border Protection Department tried to dampen speculation over his remarks, but doubts remained over whether he had inadvertently revealed a dirty bomb plot to attack the U.S. mainland.

"The potential for the next Pearl Harbor could very well be a cyber-attack," he testified on Capitol Hill Thursday before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper also appeared, telling the committee, "This threat is increasing in scope and scale, and its impact is difficult to overstate."

Obama assertion: FBI can get phone records without oversight 11 Feb 2011 The Obama administration's Justice Department has asserted that the FBI can obtain telephone records of international calls made from the U.S. without any formal legal process or court oversight, according to a document obtained by McClatchy. That assertion was revealed -- perhaps inadvertently -- by the department in its response to a McClatchy request for a copy of a secret Justice Department memo. Critics say the legal position is flawed and creates a potential loophole that could lead to a repeat of FBI abuses that were supposed to have been stopped in 2006.

"A similar threat was also made against the United States."

Bishop calls for inquiry into Habib torture claims 14 Feb 2011 Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop has called on the federal government to investigate allegations that Australian officials watched the torture in Egypt of former Guantanamo Bay inmate Mamdouh Habib. Ms Bishop said she could not believe Australian officials would "stand by while an Australian citizen was tortured without taking action to stop it". Sydney resident Mr Habib was arrested in Pakistan after the terror attacks in September 2001 and taken to Egypt, where he says he was tortured for seven months before being imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.

US: Afghan war costs $300mn per day 15 Feb 2011 A report says that Washington spends $300 million of American taxpayers' money on Afghan war per day, and this comes as the US has failed so far to establish security in the war-torn country. Under the Pentagon's proposed budget, the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will drop to $117.8 billion for fiscal year 2012, a reduction of $41.5 billion from the previous year, AFP reported.

Iraq, like, many Middle Eastern countries in the wake of the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, is under pressure to demonstrate its commitment to helping its own people. Ali al-Dabbagh told The Associated Press that the Iraqi government would postpone the expected purchase of the F-16 fighter jets and would instead use the money to beef up food rations.

A new set of guiding laws will be drafted by an appointed committee and made subject to a referendum, the military chiefs said.

Meanwhile, protesters want all their demands met, including the transition of power from the military to a civilian, democratic government.

Soldiers on Sunday scuffled with thousands of protesters camping out in the Square, the focal point of massive rallies that brought down Mubarak on Friday, a Press TV correspondent reported. Shouting slogans, protesters fought street battles with soldiers forcing them to back away.

The former Egyptian president is accused of amassing a fortune of more than £3 billion - although some suggest it could be as much as £40 billion - during his 30 years in power. It is claimed his wealth was tied up in foreign banks, investments, bullion and properties in London, New York, Paris and Beverly Hills.

Speaking on SBS's Dateline program, the Australian citizen says the Federal Government is complying with US demands because it fears being held responsible for his activities. Mr Assange says this is despite local authorities such as the Australian Secret Intelligence Service and the Australian Federal Police dropping their investigations.

HBGary CEO Also Suggested Tracking, Intimidating WikiLeaks' Donors 14 Feb 2011 WikiLeaks and its inner circle of supporters may not have been the only targets of a group of security firms that offered to take on the secret-spilling site on behalf of Bank of America. In an email conversation, the head of one of those firms also suggested going after the thousands of individuals who have donated to the group. Last week the loose hacker group Anonymous released a set of more than 40,000 emails from HBGary Federal, the security firm [terrorist group] whose servers it hacked earlier this month. One of the files in those emails was a PowerPoint presentation that described "the WikiLeaks Threat," created by a group of three security firms that suggested Nixonesque [well, GOP] tactics for sabotaging the site on behalf of Bank of America, including spreading misinformation, launching cyberattacks against it, and pressuring journalists.

9/11 wh*re Ken Feinberg: The same thieving, lying dirt-bag he's always been. That's why Obusha picked him. AP: Gulf claims process under fire --To date, only two final settlements for long-term losses -- including a $10 million payment to a BP associate the fund refuses to identify -- have been paid. 14 Feb 2011 [Eight months after BP destroyed the Gulf Coast,] Tens of thousands of fishermen, oyster shuckers, business owners, hotel operators and hairdressers still await payment. Many others whose claims have been turned down question the evenhandedness. An Associated Press review that included interviews with legal experts, government officials and more than 300 Gulf residents found a process beset by red tape and delay, and at the center of it all a fund administrator whose ties to BP have raised questions about his independence.

Gulf oil wells 10 miles from Deepwater Horizon site leaking since 2004 13 Feb 2011 While the Deepwater Horizon well has been capped since July, another group of wells about 10 miles away has been leaking oil into the Gulf since 2004, according to federal records. Citing litigation, federal officials refused last week to answer a series of questions about the ongoing leaks, including how many wells are involved, how much oil has escaped into the Gulf and whether any fines have been issued to Taylor Energy Co, LLC, the company that owns the wells.

Ecuador Judge Orders Chevron to Pay $9 Billion 15 Feb 2011 A judge in a tiny courtroom in the Ecuadorean Amazon ruled Monday that the oil giant Chevron was responsible for polluting remote tracts of Ecuadorean jungle and ordered the company to pay more than $9 billion in damages, one of the largest environmental awards ever. The decision by Judge Nicolás Zambrano in Lago Agrio, a town founded as an oil camp in the 1960s, immediately opened a contentious new stage of appeals in a legal battle that has dragged on in courts in Ecuador and the United States for 17 years, pitting forest tribes and villagers against one of the largest US corporations.

Wikileaks - Saudi asked US to stop oil lawsuits 13 Feb 2011 According to US diplomatic cables seen by Wikileaks, Saudi Arabia in 2007 threatened to pull out of a Texas oil refinery investment unless the US government intervened to stop Saudi Aramco from being sued in US courts for alleged oil price fixing. Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, deputy Saudi oil minister, said that he wanted the US to grant Saudi Arabia sovereign immunity from lawsuits by ordering a Department of Justice statement of interest on its behalf. The cable said that Prince Abdulaziz told us that King Abdullah specifically had raised the lawsuit issue with Vice President [sic] Mr Cheney during his May visit and that the Saudi government would judge the administration's willingness to file an SOI as a test of good faith. [Sounds reasonable. After all, Saudi Arabia provided the key players for Bush's 9/11 - no 9/11, no phony war on (their own) terror. --LRP]

Barack Obama to unveil $1.1tn cuts in US budget over next decade --President announces pay freeze for government workers and slashes projects designed to help the poor and the environment [after extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich] 13 Feb 2011 Barack Obama is poised to announce $1.1tn (£687bn) in budget cuts tomorrow in a 10-year deficit reduction plan... Obama is expected to introduce a five-year freeze on discretionary spending and a pay freeze for government workers. Home energy assistance for low-income families would be halved, and an initiative to restore the environmental health of the Great Lakes would be reduced by a quarter. The community development block grant, which goes to state governments to develop low-income areas, and funding for the Forest Service, stewards of the forests, are also likely to be cut.

Obama budget has $2.5 billion cut in heat aid for poor 09 Feb 2011 President Barack Obama will propose cutting $2.5 billion from a program that provides heating assistance to poor people in his fiscal 2012 budget, a source familiar with the budget process said on Wednesday. The move is likely to upset enrage his political base of left-leaning Democrats while proving his commitment to cut spending to Republicans, who are pressing for major cuts to help reduce the U.S. deficit [created and perpetuated by the 'war on (of) terror' and the Bush/Obusha tax cuts for the rich].

Previous lead stories: Australians saw Habib tortured, says officer 13 Feb 2011 Damning evidence from an Egyptian intelligence officer that names an Australian official who witnessed the torture of Sydney man Mamdouh Habib in Guantanamo Bay has been revealed as the trigger for a hushed-up government payout to Mr Habib and a high-level investigation. The explosive 840-word statement, released exclusively to The Sun-Herald, was shown to government solicitors three days before they suddenly paid Mr Habib an undisclosed amount to drop his lawsuit claiming Australia was complicit in his CIA-engineered kidnap in 2001, transfer to Egypt and subsequent torture.

WikiLeaks: US spied on NATO's top official 11 Feb 2011 U.S. diplomatic cables leaked by WikiLeaks appear to show that the United States has been snooping on NATO's top official using secret sources on his own staff. Confidential cables from the U.S. mission to NATO released Friday by WikiLeaks, the site that has published many secret U.S. government memos, said American diplomats received information on the private conversations of Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen from "a member of the NATO international staff." Instead of the staffer's name, the phrase "strictly protect" was used in one cable dated Sept. 10, 2009.

Algerian protesters clash with police as Egypt fervour spreads --400 arrested as officers enforce no-protest ban in Algiers 12 Feb 2011 Algerian police have beaten back around 2,000 demonstrators who tried to rally in central Algiers as aftershocks from the Egyptian revolution rumbled throughout the Middle East. Demonstrations in Algiers quickly turned to running clashes with police who had been ordered by the government of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to enforce a no-protest ban. Police took up positions throughout the centre of the city hours after the tumultuous scenes in Cairo, which are likely to have significant ramifications across the region.
