False flag alert: DHS chief: Nation's terror threat may be highest since 9/11 --DHS: State and local law enforcement officers are needed to combat terror; focus must be on aiding law enforcement to help them 'secure communities' 09 Feb 2011 The terrorist threat to the U.S. homeland has continued to "evolve" and may now "be at its most heightened state" since the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told members of Congress on Wednesday. There is an increased reliance on recruiting Westerners into terrorist organizations, she told the House Homeland Security Committee.

Documents Show FBI Warned of Murrah Bombing By Jerry Bohnen 05 Feb 2011 The federal government attempted in 2005 to reach a deal with bomber Terry Nichols to take the death penalty off the table in his Oklahoma murder trial if he admitted to making a warning phone call to the FBI the day before the 1995 bombing, according to new documents released under the Freedom of Information Act. The documents corroborate Nichols' claims that the government tried to get him to admit to making an April 18, 1995 phone call to the FBI warning of the bombing... "What that indicates to me, there is a record somewhere of that phone call and the FBI needs to explain it," said Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue, in an interview with KTOK News. "If the call was from one of their informants with McVeigh, clearly, they had knowledge of the bombing and didn't stop it."

Patriot Act extension to be brought up again on Thursday 09 Feb 2011 The House on Thursday will again take up a [controversial] bill that would extend until December key provisions of the Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law, two days after the measure fell seven votes short of the super-majority required for passage under fast-track rules. The bill will be brought up again under a "closed rule," meaning that no amendments can be offered. It will need only a simple majority to pass instead of the two-thirds that was required on Tuesday. ['The House on Thursday will again take up a bill that would extend until December key provisions of the Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law...' --That's *controversial* Patriot Act counterterrorism surveillance law. I notice the lamestream media typically adds the adjective 'controversial' to any bill/efforts that impinge -- even for the breadth of six molecules -- on any US efforts to wage war or effect corpora-terrorist rule. However, in the case of the 'PATRIOT' Act, reporters and bloggers did not add it. --LRP]

Patriot Act extension fails in the House by seven votes --GOP-controlled House plans to bring measure back 08 Feb 2011 House Republicans suffered an embarrassing setback Tuesday when they fell seven votes short of extending provisions of the Patriot Act, a vote that served as the first small uprising of the party's tea-party bloc. With most Democrats opposing the extension, the final tally was 277 members in favor of extension, and 148 opposed. The Republicans who control the House made plans to bring the measure back for a quick vote later this month under normal rules, requiring only a simple majority for passage.

Homegrown terror plots focus of hearings --The House Homeland Security Committee will open hearings Wednesday into the domestic terror threat in the U.S. 08 Feb 2011 From May 2009 to last November, authorities broke up 22 homegrown terror plots, compared with 21 during the previous eight years. The House Homeland Security Committee opens hearings Wednesday into the terrorist threat in the United States. In the weeks ahead, the panel will hold sessions on the domestic radicalization of American Muslims.

King Rebuffs Pleas to Broaden House Hearings on Threat of 'Radical Islam' 08 Feb 2011 Rep. Peter King (R-Nutjob-NY), the new chairman of the Homeland Security Committee who has ignited a storm of controversy for planning hearings next month on the growing threat of 'radical Islam,' is refusing to bow to pressure to broaden the scope of the probe to include extreme environmentalists [?] and white supremacists. King told FoxNews.com that he plans to hold the first of a series of hearings over the next year and half in the first or second week of March.

AP: At CIA, grave mistakes, then promotions 09 Feb 2011 A hard-charging CIA analyst had pushed the agency into one of the biggest diplomatic embarrassments [the kidnapping and torture of Khaled el-Masri] of the U.S. war on terrorism. Yet despite recommendations by an internal review, the analyst was never punished. In fact, she has risen to one of the premier jobs in the CIA's Counterterrorism Center... In the years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, officers who committed serious mistakes that left people wrongly imprisoned or even dead have received only minor admonishments or no punishment at all, an Associated Press investigation has revealed. Though Obama has sought to put the CIA's interrogation torture program behind him, the result of a decade of haphazard accountability is that many officers who made significant missteps are now the senior managers fighting the president's spy wars.

Kabul confirms US bases in Afghanistan --Permanent bases enable US troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014 deadline 08 Feb 2011 Afghan President Hamid Karzai has confirmed US plans to set up permanent bases in his country, enabling its troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond the 2014 deadline. The decision comes after negotiations between Karzai and US officials and senators on a range of strategic issues, including the establishment of permanent military bases in Afghanistan, DPA reported. "Yes they want this (permanent bases) and we have been negotiating with them," Karzai said at a press conference in his presidential palace on Tuesday.

Wikileaks: No 10 urged commander to play down Afghanistan failures 08 Feb 2011 A senior adviser to Gordon Brown put pressure on the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan to play down the "bleak and deteriorating" situation to reduce criticism of his government, leaked documents disclose. Mr Brown, the prime minister at the time, visited the country and met Gen Stanley McChrystal, the US military commander, who described the growing threat posed by the insurgency and warned that the Afghan authorities faced a crisis of confidence. A cable states that a security adviser to Mr Brown told Gen McChrystal -- with Mr Brown present -- that his "bleak assessment" could result in negative press coverage.

Torture routine in Iraqi prisons: Amnesty 08 Feb 2011  Iraq operates secret prisons and routinely tortures prisoners to extract confessions that are used to convict them, Amnesty International said in a report released on Tuesday. An estimated 30,000 men and women remain in custody in Iraq, some in secret facilities operated by the ministries of defence and interior, the London-based rights watchdog said in the report, titled "Broken Bodies, Broken Minds." Amnesty said that Iraq's Central Criminal Court often convicts defendants on the basis of "confessions" clearly obtained under torture. [Saddam Hussein: Clearly the better deal, six ways to Sunday.]

Three car bombs kill 7, wound 78 in Iraq's Kirkuk 09 Feb 2011 Three car bombs aimed at Iraqi security forces killed at least seven people and wounded 78 in the northern city of Kirkuk on Wednesday, police and hospital sources said. US govt seeks to reopen Blackwater case 08 Feb 2011 A US appeals court met behind closed doors as the government appealed a judge's decision to clear five former guards with security company Blackwater of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in 2007. The three appeals court judges agreed to a request from all sides for the hearing into the controversial case to be closed to the public. A ruling is not expected for three months.

US embassies' foreign staff 'exploited' 08 Feb 2011 US embassies in the Persian Gulf states are using low-level staff whose employers illegally confiscate their passports and provide them with poor living conditions. An internal US State Department report says employers who provide gardeners, maids, cooks and local guards to embassies in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates put the workers at risk of human trafficking. Over three-quarters of the scores of workers at the embassies in question told investigators that they were forced to pay fees to get their jobs, which for more than 25 percent of them was equal to over a year of their salary, AP reported.

'US pushes for Mubarak copycat in Egypt' 09 Feb 2011 To preserve its interests in Egypt, Washington favors the formation of a non-democratic government similar to that of President Mubarak's regime, says the director of the Institute for (Persian) Gulf Affairs. "The United States is not looking to support democracy in Egypt - this is very clear from the 30 years of support that it has given to Hosni Mubarak who has been fighting against democracy and fabricating elections," Ali al-Ahmed said in an interview with Press TV. Despite massive human rights abuse claims in the past 20 years of rule under Egypt's Emergency Law, the US continues to support Mubarak's regime with large financial and military support, says the Federation of American Scientists.

Egypt hospitals 'told to downplay protest deaths' 09 Feb 2011 Human Rights Watch says government-controlled health services in Egypt have been pressured into playing down the number of casualties during anti-government protests. The group has documented the deaths of 297 people, but says the final toll is likely to be significantly higher. Human Rights Watch says the vast majority of the deaths in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez were on January 28 and 29 as a result of live gunfire as riot police fought running battles with protesters.

'Egypt TV creates media blackout' 09 Feb 2011 An eyewitness who has escaped from southern Egypt says the state TV tries to create a media blackout by inciting violence against all foreigners that come to small towns. Mohammad Abdo has escaped from Kharga and brought to Cairo videos of the police clampdown on the protesters there which has resulted in the death and injury of hundreds of people. Abdo told press TV on Wednesday the local state-run TV tries to prevent the media coverage of the protests in small towns.

Army deploys more tanks in Cairo 09 Feb 2011 Reports say Egyptian armed forces have stationed a large column of tanks and mechanized infantry vehicles in and around Cairo's Liberation Square. It comes as thousands of protesters are camping outside the parliament as part of their campaign to topple President Hosni Mubarak. Pro-democracy protesters have also attempted to block the parliament building. Opposition parties plan a massive march towards the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Anti-Mubarak protests turn violent --Security forces open fire on demonstrators 09 Feb 2011 Pro-democracy protests in Egypt turn more violent as hundreds of protesters have been killed or wounded in the latest round of crack-down on demonstrations. The violence occurred in the southern Kharga city on Tuesday. Medics said on Wednesday at least 60 people were hit by live bullets after security forces opened fire on the demonstrators. At least three people have been killed and hundreds of others wounded in Kharga over the past 24 hours.

Egyptian protesters block parliament --Hundreds are staging a sit-in outside parliament to reinforce their demands that the whole ruling regime step down and not just the president 09 Feb 2011 Several hundred Egyptian protesters attempted to block parliamentary buildings in Cairo on Wednesday as part of their campaign to oust President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year-old regime. The building was protected by troops backed by armoured vehicles, but there was no violence, with protesters instead staging a sit-in to blockade the lower house, just as others have occupied Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Egyptians renew appeal for Mubarak to resign now on biggest day of protest --Hundreds of thousands of protesters pack Tahrir Square in Cairo and reject concessions on transfer of power in September 08 Feb 2011 Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians have turned out for the largest demonstration to date in Cairo, with renewed demands for the immediate resignation of their president, Hosni Mubarak. Vice-president Omar Suleiman, the former intelligence chief who is leading negotiations with Egypt's opposition groups, sought to appease protesters with a TV assurance that Mubarak had endorsed a timetable for a "peaceful and organised transfer of power" in September.

Wikileaks: no proof that Julian Assange encouraged leak 09 Feb 2011 Investigators in the United States are believed to have failed to find evidence to support a prosecution of Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks, for encouraging the leak of secret government documents. Furious officials and congressmen have called for Mr Assange to be tried for "inducing" the disclosure of diplomatic cables by Bradley Manning, a US army private... Yet lawyers for the FBI and the US department of justice have not found evidence that Mr Assange told Pte Manning to hand WikiLeaks the files, according to reports.

3 in WikiLeaks case fight Twitter disclosure order 09 Feb 2011 Three people associated with the anti-secrecy Web site WikiLeaks are asking a federal judge in Alexandria not to force the social-networking site Twitter to turn over data about whom they communicate with online. ...The dispute challenges the Obama administration's argument that it can demand to see computer data and read months' worth of private messages, even if they have nothing to do with WikiLeaks. In court documents unsealed Tuesday, the three challenged a Dec. 14 court order forcing Twitter to tell the government the names of those they talk to privately and who follow their posts.

WikiLeaks Supporters Face Hunt for Leaders in Grand Jury Probe 08 Feb 2011 A U.S. grand jury will consider evidence this week collected by the FBI about Anonymous, which attacked websites of four companies to punish them for blocking contributions to WikiLeaks, according to court papers and a spokesman for the self-styled group of activist hackers. The federal grand jury in San Jose, California, will begin taking evidence Feb. 10 that includes computers and mobile phones seized from suspected leaders as prosecutors probe the coordinated so-called denial-of-service attacks in December, according to a federal subpoena and the spokesman, Barrett Brown.

Mega barf alert! Military to Serve Gulf Seafood in Its Stores --While many still have concerns over the safety of the [BP-poisoned] seafood, the FDA has said many times it is completely safe. 07 Feb 2011 Gulf of Mexico seafood businesses in the Gulf have gotten a boost from a deal that was made between an organization that has been helping the area since Hurricane Katrina, Ready 4 Takeoff, and The Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. The contract has brought the fish and shrimp to 72 military bases across the country, where it will be sold under such names as Emeril Lagasse, the famous TV chef.

U.S. military purchases Gulf of Mexico seafood 07 Feb 2011 Sales of Gulf of Mexico seafood are getting a boost from the military after being hammered by last year's BP oil spill, which left consumers fearing that the water's bounty had been tainted [by BP's COREXIT]. Ten products, including fish, shrimp, oysters, crab cakes, and packaged Cajun dishes such as jambalaya and shrimp etouffee are being promoted at 72 base commissaries along the East Coast, said Milt Ackerman, president of Military Solutions Inc., which is supplying seafood to the businesses.

Chris Lee, R-N.Y., resigned from Congress after a report emerged that he had sent flirtatious e-mails, including one with a bare-chested photo of himself, to a woman he met on Craigslist. Boehner, speaking on a Cincinnati radio affiliate, said he is a "big believer" in what the Tea Party stands for, and is in touch often with leaders of the grassroots, conservative movement. "I should be," Boehner said on WLW radio when asked if he were a member of the Tea Party.

GOP-led House seen blocking healthcare funds 08 Feb 2011 The U.S. House of Representatives is likely to vote to block funding for President Barack Obama's signature 'healthcare overhaul' when it takes up a budget plan next week, House Republican Leader Eric Cantor said on Tuesday. House Republicans aim to pass a spending measure next week that would immediately cut at least $32 billion from the government's $3.7 trillion budget in an effort to trim budget deficits that could hit an estimated $1.5 trillion this year [thanks to tax cuts for rich; illegal, over-funded wars on multiple fronts; and the give-away of the US Treasury to US corpora-terrorists].

Gag me with a chainsaw! Just *change parties* and be done with it, liar. Obama to host House GOP leaders for lunch 08 Feb 2011 President Barack Obama is hosting House Republican leaders for lunch at the White House on Wednesday. It's a step toward better outreach to the GOP, something Obama acknowledged he needed to do after Republican gains in the November midterm elections [because Obusha accomplished *zippo* in the first two years of his pathetic mis-ministration, as he kept surrendering to his GOP over-lords and corpora-terrorist handlers over and over again]. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the meeting between the president and House Speaker John Boehner [who has snubbed Obama multiple times, but the little coward keeps pleading with the bully, please be nice to me], Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, the top GOP leaders in the House.

Polar bears having fewer cubs due to global warming 08 Feb 2011 Polar bears numbers could plummet with climate change, according to a new study that showed females are giving birth to fewer cubs due to the loss of sea ice. Researchers at the University of Alberta looked at how melting sea ice in the 1990s effected the breeding success of polar bears. The study found the early melting of the ice made it more difficult for the bears to hunt seals successfully and build up energy.

'US sends warships, troops to Egypt' 07 Feb 2011 The US is sending warships, including one with 800 troops, and other military assets to Egypt as the revolution in the North African country gains momentum. Officials in Washington have stated that the move is to be prepared in case of an evacuation of Americans from Egypt. The Pentagon has dismissed widespread assumptions that military intervention in Cairo is being contemplated, asserting that the objective of the deployment is mainly for the evacuation of US citizens in case the situation in Egypt further deteriorates.
