There is an increased reliance on recruiting Westerners into terrorist organizations, she told the House Homeland Security Committee.

 

Documents Show FBI Warned of Murrah Bombing By Jerry Bohnen 05 Feb 2011 The federal government attempted in 2005 to reach a deal with bomber Terry Nichols to take the death penalty off the table in his Oklahoma murder trial if he admitted to making a warning phone call to the FBI the day before the 1995 bombing, according to new documents released under the Freedom of Information Act. The documents corroborate Nichols' claims that the government tried to get him to admit to making an April 18, 1995 phone call to the FBI warning of the bombing... "What that indicates to me, there is a record somewhere of that phone call and the FBI needs to explain it," said Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue, in an interview with KTOK News. "If the call was from one of their informants with McVeigh, clearly, they had knowledge of the bombing and didn't stop it."

US embassies' foreign staff 'exploited' 08 Feb 2011 US embassies in the Persian Gulf states are using low-level staff whose employers illegally confiscate their passports and provide them with poor living conditions. An internal US State Department report says employers who provide gardeners, maids, cooks and local guards to embassies in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates put the workers at risk of human trafficking. Over three-quarters of the scores of workers at the embassies in question told investigators that they were forced to pay fees to get their jobs, which for more than 25 percent of them was equal to over a year of their salary, AP reported.

Egypt hospitals 'told to downplay protest deaths' 09 Feb 2011 Human Rights Watch says government-controlled health services in Egypt have been pressured into playing down the number of casualties during anti-government protests. The group has documented the deaths of 297 people, but says the final toll is likely to be significantly higher. Human Rights Watch says the vast majority of the deaths in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez were on January 28 and 29 as a result of live gunfire as riot police fought running battles with protesters.

Mohammad Abdo has escaped from Kharga and brought to Cairo videos of the police clampdown on the protesters there which has resulted in the death and injury of hundreds of people. Abdo told press TV on Wednesday the local state-run TV tries to prevent the media coverage of the protests in small towns.

 

Army deploys more tanks in Cairo 09 Feb 2011 Reports say Egyptian armed forces have stationed a large column of tanks and mechanized infantry vehicles in and around Cairo's Liberation Square. It comes as thousands of protesters are camping outside the parliament as part of their campaign to topple President Hosni Mubarak. Pro-democracy protesters have also attempted to block the parliament building. Opposition parties plan a massive march towards the Presidential Palace on Friday.

Polar bears having fewer cubs due to global warming 08 Feb 2011 Polar bears numbers could plummet with climate change, according to a new study that showed females are giving birth to fewer cubs due to the loss of sea ice. Researchers at the University of Alberta looked at how melting sea ice in the 1990s effected the breeding success of polar bears. The study found the early melting of the ice made it more difficult for the bears to hunt seals successfully and build up energy.

'US sends warships, troops to Egypt' 07 Feb 2011 The US is sending warships, including one with 800 troops, and other military assets to Egypt as the revolution in the North African country gains momentum. Officials in Washington have stated that the move is to be prepared in case of an evacuation of Americans from Egypt. The Pentagon has dismissed widespread assumptions that military intervention in Cairo is being contemplated, asserting that the objective of the deployment is mainly for the evacuation of US citizens in case the situation in Egypt further deteriorates.
